Land To Sea: An Exploration of the Spatial Implications of Tides

Hypothesis

This thesis will explore the tidal movement of ocean water and the sensory experiences it offers as a tool to construct an ever-changing space reflecting the transition from land to sea, which will create an awareness of it’s unique characteristics by allowing visitors to interact with the water in a way that is meaningful to them.

Precis

This thesis will explore the tidal movement of ocean water and the sensory experiences it offers as a tool to construct an ever-changing space reflecting the transition from land to sea, which will allow for visitors to interact with the ocean in a way that is meaningful to them, whether it be playing, sight seeing, or contemplation. My methodology will attempt to address how architectural form can express both the real and innate forces inherent in water. Using a combination of theoretical essays, field studies and precedents, the influence of these real and innate forces will be analyzed. The goal of this thesis is for the architecture at the water’s edge to act as a catalyst to reflect a linear progression from groundedness to transcendence as the user progresses further into the designed spaces, creating an awareness of the sea and its unique characteristics.
